Microelectronic integrated circuits have been the central key strategic development in China, especially in recent years of the shortage of technology and talents in the related area, specifically in analog integrated circuits design. UM owns the State Key Laboratory (SKL) of Analog and Mixed-Signal VLSI, the only one SKL in the area of Microelectronics in the southern part of China as well as the Greater Bay Area (GBA). The said SKL published over 40 papers in the world-renowned flagship conference – The International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC).

The Institute of Microelectronics (IME) provides two programmes of Master in Microelectronics which help to train the research scholars and application engineers in the area of microelectronic integrated circuits. The programme of Master of Philosophy (M.Phil) focuses on research of advanced microelectronics integrated circuits, which can provide creativity training for knowledge and skills required for a microelectronics research career, for example to further pursue a Ph.D degree in future. The “Thesis” option of the programme encourages the students to perform innovative researches with publications in top-tier in conferences and journals.

The programme of Master of Science (M.Sc) in Microelectronics helps to train the talents and advanced engineers in the area of microelectronic integrated circuits, to answer the shortage of talents in China and more importantly the GBA. The programme of Master of Science will focus on engineering training through projects or internships, which can train the talents for knowledge and skills required for advanced microelectronics engineering career. The modes of “Project Report” or “Internship and Report” are made available in this programme for training, with more concentration in practical microelectronics circuit implementation.

The programmes are targeted for training the integrated circuits (IC) design engineers for answering the talent gap of research scholars and engineers in IC academia/industries in China, especially the analog IC area. The graduates can easily find their careers in the Greater Bay Area (GBA) e.g. in Shenzhen, Zhuhai, which have well-developed IC or related industries, with increasing demands in the related IC engineers for China’s recent strategic talent development plans in the IC area. Also, in Macau and Hong Kong, there are IC industries and can provide opportunities for the graduates. Besides, with the research capabilities they developed during the Master of Philosophy programme, they will have competitive advantages for further pursuing their Doctoral degrees in UM, mainland China, or international academia in the Microelectronics IC area.
