High-Efficiency Single-Stage Wireless Power Receiver and Wireless Charger

Wireless power transfer (WPT) using near-field magnetic coupling that pioneered by Tesla has attracted extensive attention recently. It has a broad range of applications such as biomedical implants, battery chargers of portable electronic devices and electric vehicles. In this talk, a single-stage wireless power receiver and a wireless charger for portable applications will be presented, respectively.  Both the receiver and the charger employ a 3-level reconfigurable resonant regulating (R3) rectifier as the power stage with only 4 on-chip switches and 1 off-chip capacitor. By using the proposed pulsewidth modulation (PWM) controller with ramp-stacking technique, the receiver regulates the output voltage at 5V and delivers a maximum power of 6W with a measured peak efficiency of 92.2% and fast transient responses. For the charger, a bootstrapping technique using a voltage doubler with adaptive phase control is proposed to integrate bootstrap capacitors on-chip, and smooth transition from the constant-current mode to the constant-voltage mode is also achieved by sharing the same PWM controller for the constant-current and the constant-voltage loops. The charger deliveres a maximum charging current of 1.5 A, and the measured peak efficiency reached 92.3% and 91.4% when the charging currents were 1 A and 1.5 A, respectively.

Prof. Cheng Lin received the B. Eng degree from Hefei University of Technology, Hefei, China, in 2008, the M. Sc. degree from Fudan University, Shanghai, China, in 2011, and the Ph.D. degree from The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), Kowloon, Hong Kong, in 2016, respectively. In 2018, he joined the School of Microelectronics, University of Science and Technology, where he is currently a Professor. He was a Postdoctoral Research Associate with the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering, HKUST, from 2016 to 2018, and was an Intern Analog Design Engineer with Broadcom Limited, San Jose, USA, from 2015 to 2016. His current research interests include power management and mixed-signal integrated circuits and systems.
