Under the sponsorship of the Science and Technology Development Fund (FDCT), the State Key Laboratory of Analog and Mixed-Signal VLSL (SKL-AMSV) was established at the University of Macau in 2010. Over more than a decade since its inception, the lab has grown into a world-leading player in cutting-edge electronic technology with some unique, state-of-the-art testing equipment owned by no one else in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. It has also given Macao a head start in this field, cultivating many local academics and industry experts as well as providing a pipeline of chip design talents for neighbouring regions.
Prof. Rui P. Martins, Founding Director of the lab, is a trailblazer in Macao’s microelectronics research and development. He came to the University of Macau from Portugal in 1992 and has led generations of students to conduct research in this field. Their dedication has enabled Macao, a latecomer to scientific research, to build its own brand of semiconductor chips.
In recent years, the lab kept spearheading Macao’s high-tech industry in line with the policies of the SAR Government, by promoting collaboration among the industry, academia and research institutes, and doubling down on research result transfer. At present, it has accumulated multiple promising R&D achievements.
