A team from the University of Macau (UM) State Key Laboratory of Analog and Mixed-Signal VLSI and Institute of Microelectronics (IME) once again showcased its cutting-edge research at the 72nd International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) held in San Francisco, United States. Maintaining its exceptional performance from last year, UM had 14 papers accepted at this year’s conference. These consistent achievements underscore the international recognition of UM and its sustained leadership in the field of microelectronics.

This year’s conference (ISSCC 2025) accepted 246 papers from a competitive pool of 914 submissions globally. UM significantly contributed with 14 papers as the primary affiliation. Aligning with the conference theme of ‘the Silicon Engine Driving the AI Revolution’, UM’s accepted papers span crucial areas such as data conversion, wireless communications, power conversion, sensors, edge AI. These topics are directly relevant to emerging research areas including the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, and big data, and the papers present groundbreaking circuit designs in bulk-CMOS technologies. Members of the UM team who attended this year’s conference include Prof. Man-Kay Law, Prof. Jun Yin, Prof. Chi-Hang Chan, Prof. Chi-Seng Lam, Prof. Ka-Meng Lei, Prof. Mo Huang, Prof. Wei-Han Yu and Prof. Minglei Zhang, and a number of UM researchers and postgraduate students. In addition, Prof. Jun Yin also presented a tutorial at ISSCC 2025.

Highlighting the exceptional talent within UM, four PhD students (Yuefeng Cao, Shuhao Fan, Haoran Li, Zhiguo Tong, Xiongjie Zhang) received the prestigious Pre-doctoral Achievement Award from the IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society, recognizing their outstanding research contributions in microelectronics. This is a significant increase from last year and further solidifies UM’s position as a leading institution for nurturing young researchers. Another PhD student, Dan Shi, received Student-Travel Grant Award. In addition, 1 PhD student of microelectronics from UM were invited to give presentation in the Student Research Previews section.

In a landmark achievement for UM, the team also received the Takuo Sugano Award (Far-East Best Paper Award) for one of their outstanding publications (by Yuefeng Cao, Minglei Zhang, Yan Zhu, Rui Martins, Chi-Hang Chan, titled “A 12GS/s 12b 4× Time-Interleaved Pipelined ADC with Comprehensive Calibration of TI Errors and Linearized Input Buffer”), which is the 2nd Takuo Sugano Award received by UM.

Organised by the IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society, the ISSCC is the most prestigious international conference in the field of electronics, with a rigorous paper selection process. It is also the world’s largest and highest-level conference on solid-state circuits held annually, which showcases the latest global trends in solid-state circuit research and development. The UM team’s trip to this year’s event was sponsored by the Science and Development Fund of Macao and the university.
