The Lecture is:

Comparators tell more than “1” or “0”: An Example of an 8b 1GS/s SAR ADC Fully Utilizing the Comparator

Abstract:

The SAR ADC is vital for ADC-based serial links due to its energy efficiency, but speed is a challenge. Metastability is a limiting factor to its speed. Traditional solutions increase time or speed up the comparator for metastability tolerance, causing a speed-power trade-off. A potentially more efficient solution is to monitor the comparator’s comparison time and correct codes. By utilizing the extra free information, this work acquires two extra bits and accelerates conversion. It uses an on-chip self-tuning delay for accuracy and a bi-directional switching logic for speed. It also minimizes the impact of changes in the input common-mode voltage. This results in a 47.2dB SNDR at 1GS/s with a Nyquist input. The 8b SAR ADC consumes 4.15mW and 0.0032mm2, leading to a Walden FoM of 22.23fJ/conv.-step.
