Capacitive Power Transfer: Basic Issues and Applications

 

Abstract:

Capacitive power transfer (CPT) technology is a non-contact power transfer over a certain distance by means of displacement current, which has higher efficiency and power density for short to medium transfer distances (millimeter scale) compared to inductive power transfer (IPT) technology. Despite its great potential advantages, CPT technology is far behind IPT technology and has not yet been applied in the market. In this talk, we will discuss the challenges and opportunities in the research area of CPT technology. Specifically, this talk will cover the following key topics: 1) The development of CPT technology; 2) Difference between CPT and IPT and challenges CPT faces; 3) Design and implementation methods of CPT converters for specific applications.

 

Biography:

Dr. Ying Liu received the B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Harbin Institute of Technology, Harbin, China, in 2014, 2016, and 2023, respectively. She also received a Ph.D. degree in power electronics from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong, in 2021. She joined Harbin Institute of Technology in 2023, where she is currently an Associate Researcher of electrical engineering. Now she also serves as a visiting Research Fellow at City University of Hong Kong. Her research focuses on wireless power transfer, including capacitive power transfer and its applications, inductive power transfer for implant medical devices, underwater power supply and so on.
