The University of Macau (UM) is expected to complete the testing of a new-generation, low-cost and low-loss power quality compensator soon, according to assistant professor Lam Chi Seng from the university’s State Key Laboratory of Analog and Mixed-Signal VLSI) (AMS-VLSI Lab).

The project, which received support from the Science and Technology Development Fund (FDCT) of Macao SAR and UM’s Research Committee, was started in 2006 by a research team led by associate professor Wong Man Chung from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Faculty of Science and Technology, UM. It aims to help power consumers conserve energy and reduce emission by reducing losses in power transmission and distribution. At a public meeting held by the FDCT in late March, the FDCT disclosed the progress of the various research projects, and the new-generation power quality compensator developed by UM was well received for its promising applications in everyday life.

‘This new-generation compensator would bring substantial economic benefits for major power consumers by helping them reduce electricity bills,’ says Dr Lam. ‘We have already been granted two national invention patents for this project, and we are in the process of applying for a US patent.’
