Compensation techniques for CMOS low dropout regulators
Abstract:
Low dropout linear voltage regulators (LDOs) are widely used in modern electronic systems as their good merit of fast transient response, low voltage ripple, simple application circuit, etc. Traditional LDOs feature an output capacitor with µF range to maintain the loop stability and good transient performance, where the dominant-pole compensation is often used. The first part of this talk will briefly discuss the compensation strategy of CMOS LDOs, and then introduce several compensation techniques to stabilize the LDOs with bulky off-chip capacitors, targeting for the applications of low power, high loading capability, etc.
Recent development of output-capacitorless low dropout regulators (OCL-LDOs) realizes on-chip, local voltage regulation to enable more effective integrated power management for System-on-a-Chip (SoC). In order to stabilize the OCL-LDOs with the removal of the off-chip capacitor, Miller compensation becomes an attractive alternative that offers the possibility of area-efficient integration. In the second part of this talk, several advanced frequency compensation techniques, developed from Miller compensation, will be introduced and discussed, targeting for fast transient response, full-load stability, etc.
Biography:
Jianping Guo (S’09–M’12–SM’16) received the B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in electronic engineering from Xidian University, Xi’an, China, in 2003 and 2006, respectively, and the Ph.D. degree in electronic engineering from The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), Hong Kong, China, in 2011.
From 2004 to 2007, he worked in Xi’an Deheng Microelectronics Inc. as an IC designer. From 2011 to 2012, he was a post-doctoral research fellow in the Department of Electronic Engineering, CUHK. In July 2012, he joined the Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU), Guangzhou, China, where he is an Associate Professor in the School of Electronics and Information Technology. His current research interest includes analog ICs and power-management ICs.
Dr. Guo is the Vice Chairman of the IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society Guangzhou Chapter, and the Deputy Director of Guangdong Engineering Center of Integrated Circuits. He has authored or co-authored more than 50 papers in the international journals and conferences, including 3 JSSC papers, 4 TPEL papers, 2 TCAS-I papers, 1 TCAS-II paper, and 1 TVLSI paper.
