Prof. Ben U Seng Pan, deputy director of the State Key Laboratory of Analog and Mixed-Signal VLSI (the AMS-VLSI Lab) and professor of the Faculty of Science and Technology at the University of Macau (UM), has been named Distinguished Lecturer of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Solid-State Circuit Society (IEEE SSCS) for the 2014-2015 period. He is the first scholar from Macao to receive this honour. Prof. U has also been invited to serve on the Technical Program Committee of the International Solid State Circuit Conference (ISSCC) in the next five years, becoming the first scholar from Macao to serve on this committee.

IEEE SSCS is the most authoritative international organisation in the field of integrated circuits. It is known for releasing the most advanced technologies and the latest research results in the field. It produces The IEEE Journal of Solid-State Circuits, which has the highest Impact Factor and is the most cited journal by the United States Patents in the field of integrated circuits. IEEE SSCS is the organiser of ISSCC, the world's premier circuits realisation conference which is considered the “Chip Olympics”. Every year ISSCC attracts over 3,000 representatives from leading companies, top universities and research institutions, but only about 200 papers are accepted each year.

All IEEE SSCS Distinguished Lecturers and ISSCC technical programme committee members come from world-renowned universities and companies, including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University, Intel, Texas Instruments, NXP Semiconductors, Renesas Electronics, Samsung, etc. The fact that Prof. U has been named IEEE SSCS Distinguished Lecturer and invited to serve on ISSCC technical programme committee shows international recognition of the achievements of UM scholars and the AMS-VLSI Lab’s leading position in the field of analog integrated circuits.

In addition to his outstanding academic achievements, Prof. U has also made groundbreaking contributions to the development of cutting-edge technologies in the field of microelectronics, technology transfer, and industrial R&D. The AMS-VLSI Lab, headed by him and UM’s Vice Rector (Research) Prof. Rui Martins, has achieved fruitful results and earned unanimous praise from the expert assessment committee during the mid-stage assessment. Prof. U has received numerous awards and honours, including Macao’s first Prize for Scientific and Technological Innovation from the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation, the second-class State Scientific and Technological Progress Award, and the title of “Scientific Chinese of the Year 2012”. He is also the sole Gold Winner of the 2013 Business Award of the Year Macau in the Research Achievement category.
