Lecture Description:

The Lecture will provide a comprehensive overview of the key scientific and technological concepts employed by the mobile communication industry. It will also underscore the critical social and economic role mobile communication plays in the era of globalization. The aim is to familiarize the audience with past communication techniques, up-to-date telecommunication knowledge, threats, and future trends of mobile communication. The lecture will enable the audience to understand the intricate linkages between mobile communication, social networking and the global economy and as such, spark their interest in telecommunications.

 

Lecture Content:

1.         Overview of University of the West Indies & areas of study in the faculty

2.         History of communication (primitive, middle ages, age of discovery)

3.         Early pioneers of modern telecommunications

4.         Contemporary telecommunication techniques

5.         Cellular telephony and wireless technology (1G, 2G, 3G, 3GPP/LTE, 4G, GSM, UMTS, HSPA, LTW, Wi-Fi, WiMAX, Bluetooth etc.)

6.         Mobile applications, services, and software

7.         Future trends and emerging technologies

8.         Telecommunications industry (revenue, changing trends, liberalization)

 

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of the lecture the audience will be able to:

1.         Articulate the essential and contemporary scientific terminologies

2.         Compare major legacy, current, and emerging mobile technologies

3.         Formulate views on current and future market and technology trends

4.         Possess a greater understanding of the University of the West Indies
