Integration Technology and Beyond for Large-Scale Renewable Energy

Abstract:

Towards carbon neutrality and reduction of CO2, the energy paradigms across the globe are in significant transition in terms of the composition of energy resources, the ways of energy conversion, and the means of energy utilization – all relying on power electronics. At present, wind and solar photovoltaic (PV) energy, being the representative renewable energy resources, is becoming the major source of electric energy generation. Electricity energy is the primary energy in our daily lives, as well as other areas like transportation in many countries.  For example, conventional gas-powered vehicles are being replaced by battery-powered electric vehicles. It is then imperative to further advance the power conversion and the grid-integration technology, i.e., the power electronics and control technology, to achieve high efficiency, high flexibility, and high reliability in electricity energy conditioning. As such, in this talk, we will walk through the power electronics technology for grid-connected wind and solar PV power systems, focusing on topologies and advanced control. The state-of-the-art of such grid-connected systems is briefed and the future challenges and opportunities are also discussed in this talk.

Biography:

Prof. YANG Yongheng received the Ph.D. degree from the Department of Energy Technology, Aalborg University, Denmark in 2014. He joined Zhejiang University, as a ZJU100 Professor in December 2020. Prior to that, he was a tenured Associate Professor at Aalborg University. His research is focused on the control and grid-integration of solar photovoltaic power conversion systems and the reliability of power electronics systems. He was the recipient of the 2021 IEEE Richard M. Bass Outstanding Young Power Electronics Engineer Award, and the 2022 IEEJ The Isao Takahashi Power Electronics Award. He was named to the list of Highly Cited Chinese Researchers by Elsevier in 2022-2023. He was the Chair of the IEEE Denmark Section, and now, serves as a Vice Chair of the IEEE Power Electronics Society Technical Committee on Sustainable Energy Systems, and as a Council Member of the China Power Supply Society. He is also an Associate Editor for several IEEE Transactions/Journals.
