Atomic-engineering Metadevices in the Data-driven Future

Abstract:

In an era dominated by the Internet of Everything, the interconnectedness of sensors, individuals, services, and data is driving transformative changes across businesses, societies, and personal lives. This transformation demands advanced technologies that support efficient computing, versatile memory, and programmable optoelectronics. Achieving high-density, fast, energy-efficient, and cost-effective devices has become a critical goal for both academic researchers and the semiconductor industry. A significant challenge lies in miniaturizing devices while maintaining simple and cost-effective fabrication processes. This seminar will explore the fundamental aspects of thin-film architectures, valued in the industry for their straightforward and cost-effective fabrication. One key question to be addressed is how to enhance the functionality of thin-film devices to support active devices with multi-level programmability—a critical limitation in current solid-state devices. The speaker will present her research on designing programmable thin-film optoelectronics, meta-optics, and heterogeneous architectures using 2D materials at the atomic level. The showcased atomic-engineered metadevices exhibit remarkable tunability post-fabrication when subjected to electrical, optical, and thermal manipulations. These devices have promising applications across various fields, including memristors, sensors, structural colors, displays, photodetectors, and stealth technology. This seminar aims to touch interdisciplinary topics, including atomic manufacturing, 2D materials, electronics, optoelectronics, and optics, underscoring their potential to innovate and refine future microelectronics technologies.
