Title: Research overview on Optical and Electronic Technologies at INESC-Tec, and Circuit Design with Oxide Thin-Film Transistors

Abstract:

The talk will be divided in two parts. The first will be majorly focused on presenting the Optical and Electronic Technologies (OET) group at INESC-TEC. This group intervenes in the areas of optical communications, microwave devices and antennas, and also on design and test of both analog and digital systems. A few past projects and on going research will be briefly described, highlighting the main results in order to give an overview of the activities. A more focused discussion will follow on alternative integrated circuit technologies, namely those of thin-film transistors (TFT) based on oxide semiconductors. The challenges to face when designing complex circuits will be analyzed. A full design flow implemented in our group, from behavioral modeling with neural networks, simulation and layout design to testing, will be synthetically described to illustrate how complex circuit design can be enabled. A few illustrative circuits will also be presented. If time allows, an introduction to time encoding applied to IR-UWB transmitters for wireless sensor networks will be presented. Recent studies show that substantial gains on average power consumption could be achieved.

Biography

Vítor Grade Tavares earned his undergraduate and MSc degrees from the University of Aveiro, Portugal, and the Ph.D. degree from the Computational NeuroEngineering Laboratory, University of Florida, Gainesville, USA, in 2001, all in electrical engineering. He is currently an Assistant Professor at University of Porto and Senior Researcher at INESC-TEC, Porto. In 2010 he was a Visiting Professor at Carnegie Mellon University, USA. His research interests include low-power, mixed-signal and neuromorphic integrated-chip design and biomimetic computing, CMOS RF integrated circuit design for wireless sensor networks, and transparent electronics. He has coordinated several national projects, and also locally coordinated European projects. Most recent awards include co-recipient for the student best-paper award of the IEEE ICUWB 2014 and first place on TSMC design context in 90nm LP MS/RF in 2009. He was also awarded with a certificate of appreciation for contributions towards the advancement of IEEE and the Engineering Professions as Chair of the Education Society Chapter – Portugal section, which he co-founded.

Centre for Robotics and Autonomous Systems

Title: Robotics @ INESCTEC – Research areas and applications

Abstract:

This talk will review the activities in Robotics at INESC TEC, which are organized in two main areas: autonomous systems and industrial and intelligent systems. The autonomous systems area is mainly focused on mobile robotics and mobile multi-robot systems for inspection, monitoring and mapping, with applications in security, power systems, environment, aquaculture, oceanography, marine biology, resource extraction, among other sectors, while the industrial and intelligent systems area mainly addresses the development of mobile robotic solutions or robotic manipulator systems for industrial applications, including advanced manufacturing systems, logistics, and services, as well as the development of embedded intelligent systems. All these developments are supported by the research in perception, navigation, control, localization, coordination, and automatic data collection and processing.

Biography

Aníbal Matos received a PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering form Porto University in 2001. He is currently an assistant professor at the Faculty of Engineering of Porto University and also coordinates the Centre for Robotics and Autonomous Systems at INESC TEC. His main research interests are related to perception, sensing, navigation, and control of autonomous marine robots, being the author or co-author of more than 80 publications in international journals and conferences. He has lead several research projects on marine robotics funded by the Portuguese Science Agency and he was the Portuguese delegate to the management committee of the EU Cost Action “Everyone’s Gliding Observatories”. He has also participated in the development of the autonomous underwater vehicles MARES – a modular small size hovering vehicle that has been successfully used in environmental monitoring missions and underwater video footage, and TriMARES – an underwater hybrid robot developed by INESC TEC for a Brazilian hydroelectric power company to perform underwater inspection activities.

Title: Optical Sensors & Applications

Abstract:

This talk will review the activities of the Center of Applied Photonics of INESCTEC in the field of optical sensing, imaging and integrated optics.

The fabrication of optical fiber sensors will be reviewed in detail, covering aspects related to sensor head fabrication and interrogation, namely sensors based on   Bragg gratings. This sensors are employed for real monitoring of large structures such has bridges, tunnels, but also for gas sensing, for example. Over the years the unit has expanded its activity into bio-chemical sensing and examples of that work, based for example, on long period gratings will be analysed, together with activities related for live cells monitoring and handling capabilities. The final aspects covered are related to the fabrication of microstructures using laser direct writing with femtosecond laser sources and how this technology will be supporting activities on the research fields above.

 

Biography

Paulo Marques was born in Portugal in 1968. He received a degree in Physics (1991), a MSc in Optoelectronics and Lasers (1995) and a PhD in Physics (2000), all from the University of Porto, Portugal. He his currently Assistant Professor at the Physics and Astronomy Department at the Faculty of Science from University of Porto. Since October 2009 is the coordinator of the Center of Applied Photonics of INESCTEC (former Optoelectronics and Electronics Systems Unit). From May 2013 is also the director of the Micro and Nanofabrication Center of Porto University (CEMUP MNTEC).

Joined the Optoelectronics and Electronics Systems Unit (UOSE) of INESC PORTO in July 2000, being responsible for several National and European research contracts. His current research interests include integrated optical sensors, laser direct writing techniques for integrated optics and microfabrication in general, microfluidics, Bragg gratings, optical photosensitivity. More recently has been involved in laser processing with ultrafast lase sources. Has published 4 world patents (patent family of 32) and published more than 100 scientific papers in international magazines and conferences and three book chapters.

Title: Human Factors Monitoring in Future Smart Cities

 

Abstract:

More than half of the world population is living in cities today. A large number of technologies are being used to sense and monitor many aspects of our cities, from traffic to environment, but a lot of these sensing is not done in an integrated and intelligent way. Furthermore, although the cities are built for its citizens, we are not sensing citizens to help studying and managing our cities.

In this talk, we will provide a perspective to the R&D efforts being performed to turn the city of Porto, Portugal, into a living LAB for future smart cities, aiming at better integration of city-sensing technologies through novel wireless networking and sensing approaches and a close University-Municipality partnership under development for the last 4 years.

Furthermore, we will focus on how we are reaching the citizens and allowing them to contribute to this “living Lab”. Targeting some city related hazardous professionals, such as first responders or bus drivers, we will further introduce a new crowed-sensing concept based on human wearable vital signs monitoring – Vital Crowed-Sensing. The role of novel wearable and wireless network technologies to approach these challenges will be addressed.

Finally, a perspective into future trends and challenges will be presented.

 

Biography

João P. Silva Cunha is Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Bioengineering at the University of Porto (UP) (http://www.fe.up.pt) and senior researcher at INESC-TEC Associate Laboratory (http://www.inesctec.pt) where he created the BRAIN – Biomedical Research And INnovation – research group and co-founded the Center for Biomedical Engineering Research (C-BER) that aggregates ~30 researchers.

Prof. Cunha earned a degree in Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering (1989), a Ph.D. (1996) and an “Agregação” (2009) in Electrical Engineering all at the University of Aveiro, Portugal. He is visiting professor at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Munich, Germany since 2002. Presently, Dr. Cunha serves as Scientific Director of the Carnegie-Mellon|Portugal program (http://www.cmuportugal.org) – an international partnership between Portuguese universities and Carnegie-Mellon University, USA – where he is a faculty since 2007. Furthermore, he is the coordinator of the Center of Competencies for the Future Cities at UP (http://futurecities.up.pt). His R&D activities are focused in Neuro-Engineering and Advanced Human Sensing technologies. Prof. Cunha is co-author of more than 250 scientific publications and 4 patents, holding an h-index of 15.
