Inverter-based and Time-based Analog Techniques for Subthreshold ADCs

Abstract:

Ultra-low voltage analog design is fundamentally driven by energy-efficient SoCs where analog and digital cores share the same supply voltage. Subthreshold ADCs suffer from the limited voltage headroom which leaves little space for conventional analog techniques to enhance performance and efficiency. This talk discusses circuit-level approaches with inverter-based amplifiers and system-level approaches with time-based comparison. An evolution process of implementing conventional structures with inverters is introduced, allowing ultra-low voltage operation with increased flexibility in adopting traditional circuit techniques. Based on the proposed inverter-based elementary structure and CMFB, both the Miller-compensated (MC) OTA and the feedforward-compensated (FFC) OTA achieve significantly improved performance as compared to previous works. The amplifier techniques are verified in 0.3V DT and CT ΔƩ modulators in a 0.13μm CMOS. The number of oscillation cycles (NOC) to reach a VCO-comparator decision is investigated, which is found an inherent coarse quantization in parallel with the normal comparison. The NOC can be exploited for higher power efficiency and PVT robustness of VCO-based SAR ADCs.
