“Basics on CMOS fabrication process and layout design”

Abstract:

Over the last 45 years, CMOS technology has evolved to a point that it is now possible to have very complex systems integrated together on a single chip. Much care, however, needs to be considered during the different design phases to cope with limitations that technology naturally imposes. Knowing the fundamentals of CMOS fabrication and its consequences on the final device performance is very important to understand and implement design techniques that may mitigate or compensate for non-ideal effects, contributing then for a successful IC operation with good production yield. This talk will be focused on those two aspects and will be divided in two parts. The first introduces the basics of standard CMOS fabrication, from wafer preparation to photolithography, looking into deposition, the different etching processes, Ion implantation and diffusion, together with mask design. A short introduction to more modern CMOS processes, including CMOS technology scaling according to Dennard’s Theory and its consequences, will also be briefly addressed. The second part will be focused on IC design flow, and on different layout techniques that are important to minimize the parametric variation in space that will be present after fabrication.

Biography:

Vítor Grade Tavares earned his undergraduate and MSc degrees from the University of Aveiro, Portugal, and the Ph.D. degree from the Computational NeuroEngineering Laboratory, University of Florida, Gainesville, USA, in 2001, all in electrical engineering. He is currently an Assistant Professor at University of Porto and Senior Researcher at INESC-TEC, Porto. In 2010 he was a Visiting Professor at Carnegie Mellon University, USA. His research interests include low-power, mixed-signal and neuromorphic integrated-chip design and biomimetic computing, CMOS RF integrated circuit design for wireless sensor networks, and transparent electronics. He has coordinated several national projects, and also locally coordinated European projects. Awards include co-recipient for the student best-paper award of the IEEE ICUWB 2014 and first place on TSMC design context in 90nm LP MS/RF in 2009. He was also awarded with a certificate of appreciation for contributions towards the advancement of IEEE and the Engineering Professions as Chair of the Education Society Chapter – Portugal section, which he co-founded.
